John Alexander is a visionary artist whose artwork often contains representational imagery with Surrreal elements, according to Guild Hall. Recurring subjects include flora, fauna and landscape. For the Guild Hall show, Alexander has made a new body of work that incorporates natural landscapes.
Alexander is the 2012 Guild Hall Academy of the Arts Lifetime Achievement Award winner for Visual Arts. His work is exhibited internationally. Major retrospectives have been held at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, DC and at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Texas.
His art is part of permanent collections held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art (NYC), Corcoran Gallery of Art (Washington, DC), the Museum of Contemporary Art (Los Angeles, CA), the Dallas Museum of Art (Dallas, TX), The Museum of Fine Arts (Houston, TX), the Dayton Art Institute (Dayton, Ohio) and others.
BASIC FACTS: “John Alexander” and “Joel Perlman” open June 15. An Opening Reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. “John Alexander” remains on view through July 28. “Joel Perlman” remains on view through October 14.
John Alexander will give an Artist Talk on Saturday, July 20, from 4 to 5 p.m. The talk is free with museum admission.
Also opening on June 15 is “Artists & Writers: They Played in the Game.” The exhibition remains on view through July 28. The group show features artworks by artists who have played in the annual Artists vs Writers Celebrity Softball Game. The exhibition also includes photographs of the many personalities who have made the charity softball game a legend.
